Running has always been a big part of my life; I started running in 1984 and haven’t looked back. Running has afforded me many opportunities over the years but the one that stands out and means the most to me is the people I have met; from high school running friends to all the customers and runners in the community, runners are an amazing group of people.

After finishing school in 1994 I followed my passion for running and began working at Runners’ Choice, 10 years later I became a partner in the business and in 2013 completed the purchase of the business. Over the years my running has taken on many forms, from competitive to recreational, but what has never changed is my love of the sport. I still enjoy watching competitive running but would now consider myself more of a recreational runner. My focus now is on continuing to enjoy every run and help others reach their goals and hopefully become lifelong runners as well.

I started running in 1967 while I was at Victoria Public School, and continued through my years at  London South Secondary and at the University of Western Ontario. I have learned a lot about myself through all those years of running.  Running can be seen as a metaphor for life. The more you put into it – the more you get out of it ---  and it isn’t always going to be smooth – there are hills and valleys in both but in the end the ride is worth the effort.  One of my favorite highlights in running has been helping others  achieve their goals these last 25 years through our Runners’ Choice Running Clinics.  Whether I am guiding a Beginner Runner through their very first few strides or coaching a Seasoned  Runner achieve their goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon, both are equally enjoyable and very rewarding. Running has always been there for me and I like to share my Passion.

Running has always been a big part of my life and I am lucky to be a part of the great running community we have here in London. One of the most enjoyable parts of my training are the Sunday morning long runs. Whether it is the middle of winter or a warm summer day, the paths in London are full of runners getting their mileage in and giving each other encouragement along the way. I often run by myself, but I am never lonely on a run through Springbank or Gibbons Park. The camaraderie and sense of community among runners in London is incredible, and I am reminded of this every weekend when I head out for a run!

I first got involved in running at a young age when I ran some of the kiddy trots in the London Honda race series, but I didn't truly get into running consistently until I joined the Runners' Choice training clinic. The groups with the store gave me an opportunity to improve as a runner, meet many new friends, and also grow as a person. I am truly thankful that through running I have been able to make many close friends, race on both coasts of Canada, and pass on my enthusiasm for the sport to others.

      • Favourite race distance:
        half marathon
      • Favourite book:
too many to mention, but currently reading "The Devil in the White City" - a great story of the early history of Chicago, superimposed on a fictional serial murder mystery, - superbly done.
      • Favourite movie:
again lots to choose from, but Lawrence of Arabia is special.
      • Best running experience: Winter running in the Catalina Foothills above Tucson Arizona. Perfect climate, challenging conditions, inspiring scenery. A particular moment,- on an early morning run on the Rillito River Trail, Tucson, out of nowhere heading in the opposite direction, appeared an RC group member, - we could not believe it,- a total coincidence.

Part Time, Race Series Director & Coach of London Runner Distance Club

I founded the London Distance Series of track meets and London Runner Distance Club, both of which Runners' Choice sponsors, and more recently became race director for the London Honda Race Series, which the store organizes. I am passionate about growing distance running at the local and national level, and helping athletes achieve their full potential, whether that be running a personal best or competing internationally.

I don't have a lot of running to reflect on, but my best running experience so far was the Canada Day Half Marathon in 2015, spent with some awesome friends. Running has helped me many ways. Emotionally, physically, mentally, and most of all, socially. I've met so many great people within the running community. The biggest obstacle that I've had to overcome in my running was a mental challenge; the thought that "I can't do it". After I hurdled that, it was all uphill, and I hope it continues that way for years to come.

The following is a quote from the 2002 Boston Marathon poster : A marathon is a race without race, without colour, without religion, without sex, without prejudice, without nationality, without hate. A marathon is a race where everyone starts as an equal and everyone finishes a winner. This pretty much sums up the running community as a whole and why I want to train, race and associate with such great people for as long as I can.

Marathons for me are no longer about PB's. My fastest times are long past. That does not mean I don't try my hardest. The will is still there but the legs have slowed down. It is more about the journey than the result. Visiting new cities, running different courses, a unique restaurant, a local craft brewery, all add to the marathon experience.

      • Favourite Movie:

My favourite running experience was running National Cross Country in Vancouver in 2013 and qualifying for National Junior Track Championships in Edmonton.   Running has many ups and downs but the lows make the highs so great!
